CERTIFIED WATER SOFTENERS

S-100 Water Softeners

This section of the directory lists those water softeners which have been certified in accordance with "Voluntary Industry Standard For Household, Commercial, and Portable Exchange Water Softeners," S-100 and is published periodically by the Water Quality Association (WQA), as a service to the industry and consumers. The WQA is a not-for-profit international association of manufacturers, distributors, and dealers of water softeners and other water treatment systems for household, commercial, and industrial applications. This on-line directory is continuously updated to identify those water treatment equipment products that have been tested and passed stringent industry standards to become certified by the Water Quality Association.

Certification means that a production line water softener was tested at the Water Quality Association laboratory, or any of the other testing laboratories recognized by the Water Quality Association, and was found to have met the standards for removal of hardness and reduction of specific contaminants. In addition, the materials and components used in these water softener systems must meet the rigorous safety and structural integrity requirements set by industry Standard WQA S-100.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Fully Automatic - A fully automatic softener is equipped with a clock timer which automatically initiates the regeneration process. All operations, including bypass (of hard or soft water depending upon design), backwashing, brining, rinsing, and returning the unit to service are performed automatically. Brine is used for regeneration. Salt storage is sufficient for multiple regenerations.

Demand Initiated Regeneration (DIR) - A DIR softener is equipped with a flow meter or hardness sensor which automatically initiates the regeneration process after processing a predetermined volume (gallons) of water or based on a sensor reading. All operations, including bypass (of hard or soft water depending on design), backwashing, brining, rinsing, and returning the unit to service are initiated and performed automatically in response to the demand for treated water. Brine is used for regeneration. Salt storage shall be sufficient for multiple regenerations.

Efficiency Rated - An efficiency rated softener was tested and found to have met the standards for salt efficiency rating (at least 3350 grains of total hardness removal per pound of salt utilized), hardness removal and reduction of specific contaminants.

CA Efficiency Rated - A California efficiency rated water softener was tested and found to have met the standards for salt efficiency rating (at least 4000 grains of total hardness removal per pound of salt utilized), hardness removal and reduction of specific contaminants.
