Madison, WI Sewerage District Offering Grants for Chloride Discharge Reduction

An important effort by the Water Quality Research Foundation (WQRF) has resulted in an exciting program for reducing salt discharge in Madison, Wisconsin. Since May 2013, WQRF has funded and facilitated a study by the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) to investigate the potential reductive effects of high-efficiency water softeners on chloride levels in the waste stream.

Nitrate Contamination Raises Concerns over Minnesota’s Drinking Water

Nitrate levels present in the Minnesota’s drinking water supply are cause for concern, according to the state’s Annual Drinking Water Report, which was released last week. The report, which was compiled by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), shows that as much as 10 percent of the state’s non-community drinking water systems contain elevated levels of nitrate. Approximately 600 of the state’s 6,000 non-community systems have groundwater sources that have been affected by nitrate.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on 25 April. Authorities report well over 3,000 people have been killed and many buildings have collapsed in the capital, Kathmandu. As search and rescue efforts continue, hospitals in the capital continue to function but are stretched to the limit. Powerful aftershocks continue to be felt, so further damage is a risk, increasing the climate of fear amongst the local population.
