  • 1 Recent research on an emerging drinking water contaminant has shown that cation exchange water softeners which are certified to reduce hardness to <1 grain per gallon, will also reduce the concentration of strontium. This occurs because the cation exchange media preferentially captures the dissolved strontium ions even before capturing the calcium and magnesium ions which cause water hardness. The study also found that this capture of the strontium ions has no measurable impact on the softeners overall capacity to reduce hardness, which is most likely attributable to the relative concentrations of these ions in drinking water.
