Sustainable Management Standard Receives ANSI Approval

Lisle, Illinois (February 24, 2015) – The Water Quality Association (WQA) and American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) are pleased to announce that standard now known as WQA/ASPE/ANSI S-801: Sustainable Management has been officially accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard.

WQA/ASPE/ANSI S-801 is a standard that evaluates a company’s governance and management practices, relative to sustainability, at the corporate and production facility level. It focuses on the following core attributes:

  • Corporate social responsibility and healthy/safe working conditions;
  • Organizational sustainability (e.g. policies, communications, transparency/reporting, environmental monitoring and improvement); and
  • Sustainable supply chains.

WQA/ASPE/ANSI S-801 is a prerequisite for certification to two WQA sustainability-related product standards, WQA/ASPE/ANSI S-802: Sustainable Activated Carbon for Drinking Water Treatment and WQA/ASPE/ANSI S-803: Sustainable Drinking Water Treatment Systems, both of which received ANSI accreditation in 2014. Companies and facilities cannot be certified to S-801, but companies whose facilities conform to the requirements of S-801 are eligible to have their products evaluated for certification to S-802 and S-803.

“WQA began collaborating with ASPE back in 2013, to take our S-800 series sustainability standards through the formal public review process necessary for accreditation as American National Standards,” explains Pauli Undesser, CWS-VI, deputy executive director of WQA. “By achieving ANSI accreditation for our S-801 standard, we’ve put the final piece in place for our original vision of the sustainability series.”
