Bottled Water Quality Information Act Introduced

The Water Quality Association's Government Affairs Department is monitoring a new bill, introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives last month, seeking to formalize labeling disclosures required on bottled water. The Bottled Water Quality Information Act (H.R. 4978) was introduced on June 26 by U.S. Rep. Renee Elmmers (R - North Carolina).

If passed, the Act would require bottled water producers to annually prepare a bottled water quality report, which could be made available upon request and including:
  • The type of water source;
  • Treatment methods used by the bottler; and
  • Test results for the microbiological, physical, chemical, and radiological quality of bottled water, as prescribed by federal regulations.

H.R. 4978 would also require the following details to be displayed on each bottle's label:

  • The name and contact information of the bottled water manufacturer or distributor;
  • The type of water source; and
  • Instructions for obtaining the bottled water quality report.
