Helpful tips for adding certified water treatment technology to the home

The Water Quality Association is making available a free booklet, Water Treatment for Dummies (a Wiley Brand): WQA Special Edition, to help consumers save money while enhancing the quality of the drinking water in their home or business. The publication is under 50 pages long and is written in a simple "Dummies" style, helping those without a technical water background to identify water contaminants and find out how to treat or remove them.

"It is important that people have a resource that they can go to and understand when looking for answers to common water problems," said WQA Deputy Executive Director Pauli Undesser. "With Water Treatment for Dummies, anyone can learn about options and tools available to them to help them find the right products and right professionals."

Recent events, such as the lead problems in Flint, MI and the release of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) report on corrosive groundwater underscore the need for everyone to learn how to protect themselves and take advantage of commercially available products to treat drinking water properly for different contaminants.

Water Treatment for Dummies provides helpful information about everything from how water gets to our homes to tips for properly maintaining a water softener. The booklet also goes into detail about water filtration options such as devices which treat water at the point of consumption and whole-house treatment systems. In addition, the publication provides more than a dozen questions to ask a water quality professional before installing a water treatment system.

“We want to get this booklet to as many people as possible,” Undesser said. “Anyone can download Water Treatment for Dummies from our website ( or they can order a printed copy for a modest shipping and handling fee."

Water Treatment for Dummies will help guide consumers to the correct water treatment solution. Before heading to a retailer or shopping online for a product, they can visit WQA’s website to search product certification listings and to look for certified water treatment professionals.
